Ancient Egypt(P1) Nomads to Farmers

Hi, Welcome Back! Now that we have gone over the dating system(if you haven't read that post click here)we can move on to the beginnings of Ancient Egypt. So let's get started!

The Nomads of Ancient Egypt

Way before ancient Egypt became a unified and powerful nation, small groups of nomads dominated the area. What are nomads?  Nomads are people who don't live in the same place for long periods of time. There are 3 types of them. Hunter-gatherers, who move from place to place hunting and fishing animals and foraging wild vegetation, pastoral nomads, who live off of domesticated animals and usually try to live near fresh pastures to feed those animals, and trader nomads, who went around trading resources with others. All these people never lived in one place for too long, kept low populations, and didn't own many things. At the beginning of Ancient Egypt, hunter-gatherers were the most prominent type of nomad and they lived their lives the nomadic way for thousands of years.

The Nomads Find the Fertile Crescent

One of the best places for the nomads to live in was the Fertile Crescent. This crescent-shaped land in North-eastern Egypt was extremely fertile(as says in the name). This was because two very important rivers cradled the land. These were the Tigris and Euphrates. The river banks had rich and nutrient soil which led to an abundance of grass, barley, and wheat. When the first nomads entered this land they saw the many species of animals and plants that could be used as food. The grain that could be easily harvested and wide rivers where they could fish and drink from led them to come back to the Fertile Crescent again and again.

Nomads to Farmers

Some of these nomadic people started living along the river all year long. Since they were living in the same area now for a long time, they couldn't keep picking at the wild berries, nuts, and leaves for too long or they would run out of plants to harvest. So what did they do? They started growing and harvesting their own plants. The wandering nomads were turning into settling farmers!

Hey! I hope you enjoyed part 1 of the ancient Egyptians. If you have any other questions about the transition from nomads to farmers don't be shy to comment. I'll make sure I respond back. That's all I have for today but be sure to look for the next post if you're interested in learning more and I'll see you then. Have a wonderful and safe day!
